Shepley Bulfinch architectural firm is formed.

Originally Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, it is founded by George Foster Shepley, Charles Hercules Rutan, and Charles Allerton, all of whom worked for H.H. Richardson until his death this year. The firm goes on to design more than one hundred buildings for Harvard University, becomes Coolidge & Shattuck in 1915, Coolidge Shepley, Bulfinch & Abbot in 1924, Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbot in 1952, and assumes its current name in 2000.
